Week 3 Indoor Soccer

This week's game of the week featured Alpha Epsilon Pi against Tau Kappa Epsilon. As compared to last week this game was more defensive oriented. The game was very back and forth during the first few minutes, no team really taking complete control. But, in true game-of-the-week fashion, that would only last so long. The first strike of the game came from AEPi's Max Czuper. Czuper gained control of the ball, and dribbled down along the wall, was able to beat a few players. His next move would be the deadliest. Czuper shot the ball near post and squeaked the ball past the TKE's goalie, Jonathan Bell-Feins. TKE would not take long to respond though. Few minutes later, TKE struck with their only goal of the game. A hard shot from outside was taken, and AEPi's goalie, Jonathan Newdorf made a very good save, but neglected to collect the ball, leaving a great opportunity for Daniel Cohen. Cohen would not miss this chance, as he buried the ball in the back of the net. The next goal came from Jordan Sanderson of AEPi. Sanderson, not only finished well, but played good defense. He read TKE's attack as if he drew up the pass, stole the ball and had his chance on goal. It was a good one, beating Bell-Feins. AEPi's next goal was a great display of teamwork. And Sanderson was once again involved, displaying a great ability to see the field. He found Matt Haven on a cross, who then hit a laser off the post, which then hit off the back of Bell-Feins and found the back of the net. AEPi's final goal was another strike from Czuper. Czuper cleared the ball out of his defensive half to the open field, but was the only one who followed the ball. Leaving him with a one on one with Bell-Feins. Needless to say, Czuper would not miss. He placed his shot just inside the post. Although this was the game of the week, that doesn't mean things can't happen. Daniel Cohen, received a red card for an unsportsmanlike conduct. Which forced TKE to play a man down for the last few minutes of the game, not helping their chances for a come-back. AEPi won the game by a score of 4-1

The players of the game were as follows: Jonathan Bell-Feins for TKE, who made several key saves, and also was a large part in counter attacks. And, Max Czuper for AEPi, who scored two goals and was an integral part of the offense the entire game.

Stats:

AEPi:

Max Czuper 2 goals

Matthew Haven 1 goal

Jordan Sanderson 1 goal 1 assist

Jonathan Newdorf 8 saves

TKE:

Jonathan Bell-Feins 12 saves

Daniel Cohen 1 goal

Week 2 Indoor Soccer

This week's Game of the Week featured the 6v6 Men's A Champions, Milan versus the very talented D Ocho Boys. The game between the two juggernauts was played just as expected, with lots of scoring.

The scoring started in the first minute with a goal from D Ocho boys. The ball was knocked around inside the goal box, with the fight for the ball ending with Jason Murphy punching the ball past Milan's goalie, Gopal Narang. However, Milan did not allow this early goal to dictate the game and came back with five unanswered goals. The first was a follow up shot from Louis Holmes that beat D Ocho Boy's goalie, Sean Hersey to the far post. The second goal for Milan was a nice turn-and-shoot situation from MArk Amirtharaj. The third goal was set up nicely by Homes, as his cross found Grant Vickers for the put away. The fourth goal in this barrage was scired by Daniel Contreras' open net follow up shot. The final goal of the 5-0 run was hands down, the goal of the day. Contreras played a ball from mid field, through 3 players and found Richard Barriga who one-timed the ball right past Hersey.

Before the end of the half, D Ocho Boys were able to answer back and regain some momentum when Sathi Wijeyesinghe stole a pass at midfield and had a one-on-one with the goalie, beating Narang far post.

The second half followed the first half in producing more of what we expected...goals. The first goal of the second half was Barriga's second goal of the game, increasing Milan's lead to 6-2. Barriga stole a botched goal kick and had a one-on-one with the goalie which he put away easily. D Ocho Boys refused to back down, and went on to score three straight goals. The first two were scored by David Cencula. The first of Cencula's goals was a hard shot from about 12 yards out, with Joseph Cardoso on the assist. Goal number 2 for Cencula was D Ocho's most impressive goal of the day. He received the bacll at midfield and dribbled the ball through two defenders before chipping the ball over Milan's goalie (Narang) and into the back of the net. The third goal in the run for the Boys came from Kevin Cencula who beat the goalie far post on a hard shot. This put the Boys within one of Milan.

Milan fought back when Contreras found the net on a dropped cross from Amirtharaj. D Ocho Boys had some fight left and managed to score another goal with less than a minute remianing. This time, Cardoso found the net with a cross from Murphy.

The game ended with Milan on top 7-6. Look for these two teams to potentially meet again in the late rounds of bracket play.

Milan:
Amirtharaj 1 goal, 1 asst
Barriga 2 goals
Contreras 2 goals, 1 asst
Gochnour 1 asst
Homes 1 goal
Narang 11 saves
Vickers 1 goal

Week 1 5v5 Basketball

The game of the week pitted Theta Chi against AEPi in Fraternity A basketball. The rivalry between these two teams has intensified since that classic ending in the playoffs of Flag Football last semester. Theta Chi jumped out to an early lead highlighted by a three point attempt tipped in by center, Robert Forsyth. AEPi kept the game tight with great play by Gluck who had two threes in the first half. However, the rest of AEPi seemed to be off pace.

The critical play in the first half was an illegal substitution that led to a technical foul and two foul shots for Theta Chi. Corey Hutchinson knocked down both shots with ease. The technical caused a rift in the team for AEPi and really sparked Hutchinson who had two fast break lay ups in the second half. The punctuation mark for Theta Chi was an interception by Mazzalah of a pass by AEPi with 3 minutes left that lead to a successful, old fashioned three point play. Both teams will return to the hardwood next Tuesday with Theta Chi looking to start out at 2-0 while AEPi will try to return to .500 in league play.

Neubs Nubs vs. Multiple Scorgasms (Coed B)

The game started off with both teams feeling each other out. The scoring opened in the third minute with a hard shot by Neubs Michael Neuberger past Multiple Scorgasm's goalie, Carolyn Brown. The Multiple Scorgasms came roaring back with a few good chances, including a hard shot from the edge of the box by Taylor, which was saved by Neub's keeper, Daily. A few minutes later, Taylor has another open chance, but it rocketed off the post. Later, Mark Bruno had a shot on goal from point blank range but it was again handled by Daily. The half ended 1-0 in favor of Neubs Nubs.

After a brief intermission, the teams came out in similar fashion to the first half. In the third minute, Baradwai of the Neubs had the first good chance of the half, but it flew by Brown and into the stands. A couple minutes later, the game heated up as Multiple Scorgasms' Bruno put a nice pass from Ryan Higgins part Daily, tying the game 1-1. However, shortly after Neubs broke the tie when Reinhard put a hard shot from the edge of the box into the upper 90, out of reach of Brown. The Scorgasms had a chance to extend their lead a few minutes later with a free kick from outside the box. However, Bruno picked off the pass, breaking up the attack. Then, in the 10th minute, the Neubs had a second strong attempt to increase the lead, but a strong short by Neuberger flew wide, ending up harmlessly in the stands. As the game was winding down, the Scorgasms finally came back, when Taylor put a pass from Bruno into the back of the net. The first ever Indoor Soccer Game of the Week ended in a 2-2 tie.

Game of the Week

This blog will be used to track and recap exciting match-ups in Intramural Sports. A game will be chosen each week for our major team sports (i.e. 5 v5 Basketball). The Intramural Office will then provide a written account of each game. Readers are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. These comments should be appropriate and in line with good sportsmanship as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.
