Volleyball Week 2 AXO vs Never Back Down

Never Back Down gets to the courts early and does some stretching and talks about strategy, and has a good warm up. AXO arrives a just few minutes prior to game time. The players on Never Back Down look very athletic and very skilled so they will probably be a tough opponent because, according to one of the players on that team, they are the reining champions of 6 on 6 spring volleyball. Never Back Down starts with the serve 1st game. The first game starts out to be very competitive with both teams keeping it a close game, but once the score gets 8-8 Never Back Down just turns it up a notch, streaching the lead to 16-8. Then, with Jessie serving for Never Back Down they eventually win the first match 25-10.

Before the second game both teams talk strategy. AXO starts this game with the serve and they look much better this go-round, taking a 4-1 lead to start game two. Both teams have many long and good rallies. Then Never Back Down takes a 9-4 lead. However, this time AXO starts to make a comeback with Hopkins serving to make the score 9-7. I have a feeling Never Back Down won’t be backing down and letting the lead slip away. Just then they start pouring the heat on by tiring out AXO and winning this game 25-9.
Both teams played a very hard fought game and Alyssa Hopkins of AXO played good defensively during both games, diving on the floor for balls and saving points. She was outstanding in my opinion. In the first game I think the ball they were using was inflated a little too much and some of the players on AXO I think we are getting hurt. One of their players starting using their foot to kick the ball instead of hitting it with their hands because the ball was too hard. According to Julia Meyers of Never Back Down, all the girls on the team played volleyball in high school. She was very excited to be game of the week she also feels very honored to be GOTW as well.

Flag Football Week 1 The Mighty Ducks vs Antonio Chromartie Children

According to the weather report, it will be a bit on the cold side this evening with temperatures being 53 degrees, 10% chance precipitation 93% humidity and winds from SSW at 3 MPH. This is the first week of flag football. This game is between Antonio Chromartie Children vs. The Mighty Ducks. I wonder if the Ducks will have a special play called the “flying V.” Both teams have very nice warm-ups, throwing the ball around, working on passing and catching drills, both teams talk about strategy. Both teams are very excited to be chosen as GOTW. This looks like a very competitive game. The quarterback for Antonio Chromartie Children is Alex Lee and yes, he is an amazing athlete. The Ducks quarterback is John Donnelly.

Mighty Ducks starts with the ball and on the first play of the game. John takes it himself and gets a first down with his quick speed and athletic ability. On the second play of the game he runs it again and gets another first down. The coach of Antonio Chromartie Children is talking strategy with some of his players, saying try to make the QB throw it and don’t let him run the ball; and look at that Antonio Chromartie Children are able to make him throw it and Figgs of Antonio Chromartie Children is able to pick off a pass with 7 minutes left in the first quarter. Dang, just like that the Ducks intercept the ball 3 minutes later. A few plays later John throws to Andy for a TD with about one minute left in the first quarter and Ducks go for one point, John throws to Peter for the conversion to make it 7-0 Ducks end of first quarter.

Antonio Chromartie Children have the ball to start second quarter, and wow Alex Lee is doing a good job advancing the ball down field with throws of thirty yards, then twenty yards and then finally, to cap it off, a fourteen yard throw for a completion to Figg for a touch down with five minutes left in the half, but miss the conversion so its 7-6. Ducks have the ball now and are trying to score before half time. They get it all the way to the four yard line and then just as time expires for the half John is able to have a nice spin move into the end zone, then they miss the conversion making the score 13-6.

Third quarter Antonio Chromartie Children starts with the ball, nothing exciting happens and they are forced to punt the ball away. About five minutes into the third quarter John throws to big Ben and scores a TD with a nice little spin move into the End Zone now the Ducks goes for the conversion and coverts it making the score 20-6. Antonio Chromartie Children have the ball and try to make something happen. Wayne Evans makes and amazing catch that almost got intercepted. Then Alex Lee with his amazing speed and athletic ability is able to run about thirty yards but the quarter ends before he can score. Third quarter score: 20-6 Ducks lead.

Start of fourth quarter Antonio Chromartie Children still has the possession. It looks like the Ducks may win this game, but two minutes into the quarter Alex Lee has other ideas making a nice pass to Sean Ehlbeck, the team’s captain, and makes the conversion to make the score 20-13. The Ducks are trying to score again but Antonio Chromartie Children looks to have momentum and are able to force the Ducks to punt. Antonio Chromartie Children have the ball on the their own ten yard line with about forty seconds left in the game and the score is 20-13. Here we go: Alex lee is making excellent throws of twenty yards and Antonio Chromartie Children team is getting very excited because now they have the ball on the Ducks thirty yard line with about a twenty seconds left. Time is running out for them to score, then Alex Lee makes a run for about ten yards. Now the ball is on the Ducks ten yard line with ten seconds left in the game, then Alex Lee is able to make a ten yard pass to Figgs. Let’s see if they go for the win or tie it. The coach of Antonio Chromartie Children is saying “Man lets go for the tie- no wait its intramurals lets go for the win.” It’s make or break time. Alex lee takes the snap and it looks like he is getting in trouble because the Ducks do a hard blitz of three people to try and sack Alex. However, he scrabbles all the way to mid field. Now he is in big trouble and he throws to the back of the end zone where Sean Ehlbeck is waiting. He jumps up and somehow catches the ball. Antonio Chromartie Children takes the lead 21-20, and that’s how it ended. What an exciting game it was.

It was an amazing fourth quarter having Antonio Chromartie Children coming back from 20-6. It was just amazing, defied all the odds, took momentum, marched down and scored two touchdowns and win by one point. That game definitely made my week. According to Alex Lee, it was a great team effort, and he gives credit to the other team for playing hard. On being GOTW, Alex Lee said, “It’s definitely a privilege because it was such an exciting game, and I hope there’s more like this.” According to the coach of Antonio Chromartie Children “Gotta get it done- two point conversion for the win.”

Volleyball Week 1 Setstacular vs Hungry Hungry Hippos

First week of play-it’s a good match up between the Setstacular vs. Hungry Hungry Hippos, Coed A league. The game scheduled for 7pm on court 1 of the armory. Before the game both teams talk strategy about who will do what and so on also who will play what position. Setstacular has three subs and Hungry Hungry Hippos have zero subs.

Setstacular starts with the ball and looks very athletic. Some of the girls on the team look like they have played volleyball in high school. Mark Cwalinskil starts serving for Setstacular, scoring 5 consecutive points to start the game. That’s when Hungry Hungry Hippos get lucky and get a point. However, the Hungry Hungry Hippos look to be a bit confused and cannot seem to get things going. Lindsay Snellar of the Setstacular looks to a very good server for her team and scores several points for her team. Setstacular are dominating the first game by a huge margin 15-6. But it looks like Hungry Hungry Hippos look to be making a comeback making it 15-11. It looks like the Hungry Hungry Hippos are getting hungry so Setstacular needs to get focused before they blow the lead. So now looks very talented with his serving, making the lead bigger 22-11. Both teams have had very nice rally during the game. The first game ends with the Setstacular winning 25-18.

Game two starts with Hungry Hungry Hippos having first serves. This game looks like it’s going to be a totally different story than game one with them taking a 3-0 lead- then they serve one long to make it 3-1. Samuel Schlesinger looks to step it up for Hungry Hungry Hippos and has made consecutive points making it 10-5. Both teams have more rallies this games as well. Both teams are also being good sportsmen, not getting mad at making bad shots. Now Setstacular now tie the game up 10-10. “Sets” take the lead 11-10 and the HHH tie the game 12-12. At one point Randall of the “Sets” and Samuel of HHH have a nice play at the net and show good sportsmanship, and even give each other a high-five after making a good play. Earlier in Game 2 it looked like the “Sets” looked to be confused a bit. Even the Captain of “Sets” Megan Frey made a comment about her team trying to get everyone organized and find everyone’s strengths and weaknesses and trying different systems to see which one worked and where each other should be, etc. Then Setstacular makes it an 18-13 lead and never looks back, winning the second game 25-16 and winning the match 2-0.

With regards to being game of the week Frey had this to say, “Totally a surprise but good defiantly nerve racking for our first game together, but good.”

Coed A Championship Soccer Rip n Dip vs Team Awesome

This game is a championship game for Co-ed A division. It’s the battle of the undefeated. It’s going to be a chilly night to be playing soccer, with temperatures starting at 61 degrees dropping to 58 with 10% chance of perception 52% humidity and winds from ENE at 4 MPH, mostly clear skies. Game is scheduled for a 7 pm kickoff. Team Awesome’s record is 5-0 and Rip n’ Dip’s record is 6-0.

Rip n’ Dip have a good warm up while Team Awesome does not have a warm up. Rip n Dip starts with the kick off, however Rip n’ Dip looks to be out of sync and Team Awesome looks to be controlling the ball much of the first half. Five minutes into the game Ryan Atkinson scores upper 90 with an assist from the Amazing Harun Davood to put them up 1-0. Rip n’ Dip looks a bit tired and out of pace because they can’t seem to control the ball very well. Team Awesome is playing Awesome Offense and Defense. Ten minutes into the game The Amazing Harun with his speed, quickness and awesome skill is able to dribble to ball past Rip n’ Dip’s goalie to put up Team Awesome 2-0. About 3 minutes later Sean Kelly of Rip N Dip is able to get control of the ball and rip a rocket past Team Awesome’s goalie to make the score 2-1. Rip n’ Dip is able to control the ball more and has a chance to tie the game up before halftime; however Ryan Atkinson blocks a shot to save a goal. The Halftime score is 2-1 in favor of Team Awesome, because they are just Awesome.

During Halftime both teams talk strategy. Team Awesome talks about helping sustain the lead they have and try to pass the ball more. On the other hand, Rip n’ Dip talks strategy to find a way to shut down Team Awesome star player Harun, in essence, to score more goals.

Halftime is over and Team Awesome starts the second half with the kickoff. Rip n’ Dip is starting to look like a different team than the first half because they are controlling the ball a lot better than before. Early in this half Rip n’ Dip has another chance to tie the game, but several players from Team Awesome literally dive in front of ball. Ryan was one of the players who dove and he said, “we had to throw a body in front of it.” Several minutes into the second half Harun scores a second time unassisted giving Team Awesome a 3-1 lead. Everyone on Team Awesome is very supportive and has awesome sportsmanship. With 13 minutes left in regulation, Sean of Rip n’ Dip scores a second time making it 3-2. The second half has turned out to be very competitive and it’s going to be a nail biter, I can feel it. Then with 3 minutes left in the game Kevin Breslin is able to get the ball at about the 40 yard line and dribbles the ball all the way to score and make it 3-3, and regulation ends 3-3. So now each team will be taking Penalty Kicks; each team will be taking five PK’s. See what did I tell you about it being a nail biter?

Team Awesome will start and Ryan is first for his team, the goalie was able to block the shot.

Next is Rip n’ Dip Sean, who Misses high.

Linda Rassanti of Team Awesome misses the shot wide.

Emily Zido of Rip n’ dip scores.

Harun of Team Awesome scores.

Kevin of Rip n’ Dip scores.

Margaret Yelencies of Team Awesome misses.

Rachel Micol of Rip n’ Dip also misses.

Robert Breithaupt of Team Awesome scores.

Augusto Tono of Rip n’ Dip scores, the winning PK.

Even Though Team Awesome played awesome, it just wasn’t enough to seal the victory and Rip n’ Dip was able to rip by to win the game 4-3. Ryan had a few words after game: “We came off an unbelievable win last game, and then go up a bunch of goals against a great team and we couldn’t hold on in the end.” On being Game of the Week, he said, “It was great, and we’ve been out here so many weeks and playing so many nights, and finally getting some press was just awesome.” Rachel Micol of Rip n’ Dip said, “We just came back from half time and had a nice pep talk and were able to win. It feels pumped being game of the week and this is where all my hard work and practice and it was really exciting and pretty cool.” Freddy of Rip n’ Dip said that the team was just more motivated in the second half.

Week 3 Hungry Hungry Hippos vs nonkweli

According to the weather report, it’s 56 degrees mostly cloudy 10% chance of precipitation, 62% humidity winds WNW 10 MPH. This is a playoff game between 11 seed and undefeated underdog Nonkweli Versus 6 seed with a record of 1-0-2 Hungry Hungry Hippos on turf field #2. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm. Will we see Nonkweli get an upset here tonight or will HHH be Hungry for a victory? This is HHH’s 2nd time to be game of the week. The HHH looks to be playing a man down because they are missing several girls. One of the guys on the team has to be a sub which means it might tire the HHH out.

Nonkweli starts the game with the kickoff. It looks like Nonkweli is taking advantage of being up a player and scores quickly three minutes into the game. Ryan Maisel scores to make it 1-0 Nonkweli. HHH is looking very sluggish and is not playing good defense or offense to start the game, because two minutes later Nonnie Onyekweli of Nonkweli scores to make it 2-0. HHH need to get focus on the task a head or it could be a long game for them. HHH’s Matteo with his fancy footwork, speed and skill scores to make it 2-1 with ten minutes left in the first half. Nonkweli is getting very greedy and starts taking a lot more shots than HHH but those shots go wide. Matteo looks to have a great opportunity to score on a breakaway however Nonkweli will her skill and athletic ability is able prevent the speedster Matteo from tying the game up. With a minute left in the first half Adel of the HHH is able to score and tie the game up 2-2, and that’s how the half ended. I think the HHH looked out of place to start the game because they are missing several key players that could have helped Nonkweli from scoring. It just looks like Nonkweli wants it more than HHH.

The second half begins with HHH with the ball. This game is looking very physical. About three minutes into the second half Ryan scores a second time for giving Nonkweli an 3-2 lead. This game is turning out to be a very competitive game. Nonkweli has had more chance to score to make it 4-2 but HHH’s goalie with his excellent ability is able to stop Ryan from scoring. The HHH goalie was out of position and leaving the net open but he dove and was able to block the ball from going in. Sonia the captain of HHH scored from the corner. Adel and Matteo say it was a “very sick and nice shot from the corner” with about four minutes left in the game making the score 3-3. But Eric from Nonkweli scores to make the score 4-3 and that’s how the game ended in Nonkweli favor. HHH just wasn’t that hungry for a victory.

It was a very hard fought game. Being down a player and missing a few key players really hurt the HHH’s chances of winning the game. After the game I had a chance to talk to Nonkweli Robin Atkinson, who said “We played awesome and they were down 1 and we only had 2 subs and we got discouraged when they scored two goals but we knew we could win with them being down a player, and they were tired and we just kept pushing. It was awesome being the underdog and beating the 6 seeded HHH.”
